A Day of Exploration in Alexandria: Egypt’s Mediterranean Gem

Imagine a day filled with ancient history, stunning beaches, and vibrant culture. Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city, offers all this and more.

Start your day by exploring the iconic Alexandria Library, a modern marvel that blends ancient and contemporary architectural styles. Learn about the city’s rich intellectual heritage and admire the impressive collections of books and manuscripts.

Next, venture to Pompey’s Pillar, a towering granite column dating back to the Roman era. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. Don’t miss the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, a vast underground necropolis with intricate carvings and sarcophagi.

After exploring these historical sites, relax on the beautiful beaches of Alexandria. Enjoy the sun, swim in the crystal-clear waters, or simply stroll along the promenade. Indulge in fresh seafood at one of the many beachfront restaurants, savoring the flavors of the Mediterranean.

As the day comes to a close, visit the Fort of Qaitbay, a majestic citadel built on the site of the ancient Pharos lighthouse. Explore the fort’s ramparts, admire the stunning views, and learn about its historical significance.

Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa

It is considered one of the seven wonders of the world in the Middle Ages. It is the largest Roman cemetery, and the cemetery consists of a series of tombs, statues, and archaeological remains of Pharaonic funerals.

The importance of the cemetery is due to its vastness, abundance of decorations, and the complexity of its planning. It is also one of the clearest examples of the mixing of Pharaonic art with Roman art in Alexandria, and one of the best examples of funerary architecture in Alexandria.

Then move to visit Pompey’s Pillar

Pompey’s Pillar was built in honor of Emperor Decaldianus. The total height of the column, including the base, is about 2,685 metres. On the west side are two bases, which can be reached via an underground staircase. There are also two pink granite statues that look like sphinxes.

Then move to visit The Citadel of Qaitbay

Qaitbay Citadel is considered one of the most important defensive fortifications on the Mediterranean coast. It was built on the ruins of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria to fortify the city.

Pictures can be taken on the outside patio.
